It was a violin lesson at the age of 12. My teacher was late. I decided to wander the halls of the music department which was located on the campus of the local college. I soon came upon the art department and was stopped in my tracks. The roar of the furnace and those handful of students gathering to watch a pour was mesmerizing. Molten flowing metal. I want to play with metal like that! I went on to get a degree in the Practice of Art at UC Berkeley where I did play with lots of metal and other mediums, setting a foundational love of making art.
I have worked with different mediums over the years since, but the process of working with silver has been the most exciting. I set out to make simple elegant sculptural forms when the physical properties of the silver kept jumping out at me. The weight and the smooth reflective quality of silver was calming. They feel soothing in your hands.
I began to think about how this calming effect might support meditation and mindfulness. How the luxurious look and feel might prompt a daily practice. I set out to create a series of handheld meditation pieces. Each specifically designed to align with a different aspect of mindfulness. These hand-cast silver Momentos were born to help us re-connect and re-balance using the luxurious grounding qualities of silver.
